Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Wanuskewin Heritage Park hugs the west bank of the South Saskatchewan River, just five kilometres north of Saskatoon.  Within its 760 acres there are 19 pre-contact sites that represent the active society of Northern Plains Peoples.  Here you will find summer and winter camp sites, bison kill sites, tipi rings, an arrangement of boulders called a medicine wheel, and artifacts such as pottery fragments, plant seeds, projectile points, egg shells and animal bones, all within a compact area.

Corporate Structure

Wanuskewin's Mission:

Wanuskewin's mission is to operate, on a sustainable basis, a world recognized Heritage Park under the leadership and guidance of First Nations people that contributes to increasing public awareness, understanding and appreciation of the cultural legacy of the Northern Plains First Nations people. We will work cooperatively in an imaginative and culturally sensitive manner while serving as a major tourist attraction, human resource development agency and a leading scientific, cultural and educational authority.

Wanuskewin's Governance Structure:

Wanuskewin is a wide range of partnerships, founded on the idea of a cooperative relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples. A business Board of Directors governs WHPA and guidance on cultural and spiritual matters is given by First Nations Elders.

The First Nations Elders are representatives of First Nations bands, districts, or cultural nations of Saskatchewan. The Elders ensure that the needs of First Nations people are met and an authentic and unique experience is provided for all visitors to the Park.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park Authority (WHPA) has twelve (12) Directors composed of both non First Nations and First Nations people. The Park Corporation has a relationship with WIHI. WHPA is the umbrella for the partnerships that form Wanuskewin. The directors on this Board are responsible for the overall operation of the Park. Its Board of Directors consists of representatives from the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon, the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, the University of Saskatchewan, the Meewasin Valley Authority, Elders, and the Friends of Wanuskewin.
